Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers for California Registered Agent and related services.
1) What is a Registered Agent / Agent for Service of Process?
A Registered Agent is the official designee to receive legal documents (service of process, state notices) for your company. California entities must maintain one at a physical street address.
2) Why can’t I use a P.O. Box or virtual mailbox as my Registered Agent address?
California requires a physical street address where a process server can hand-deliver documents. P.O. Boxes and most virtual mailbox addresses do not qualify for agent service.
3) Can I act as my own Registered Agent?
Yes, if you have a California street address and list yourself in your SOS filings. You must also be available from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday–Friday without exception. If you go to lunch, take the day off for sickness, or take a vacation, you’re out of compliance. We are always present and ready to receive documents so you never miss service.
4) How do I change my Registered Agent to you?
File an updated Statement of Information listing us as Agent for Service of Process. We provide the exact agent name/address and can file for you if you choose the filing add-on.
5) What is included with your annual Registered Agent service?
Document acceptance, same-day secure email scan (no storage by default), and compliance reminders. Optional add-ons: mail forwarding, overnight delivery, and long-term storage.
6) When will documents be scanned and forwarded?
Items received before our cutoff (typically 3 PM) are scanned the same day. Forwarding by USPS or overnight carrier depends on the tier you select.
7) What happens if I don’t choose document storage?
Storage is optional. Without storage, files are deleted after 30 days (client or not). With storage, your documents remain securely retrievable for up to seven years.
8) What does your Statement of Information filing service include?
We prepare and submit SI-550 (Corporation) or LLC-12 (LLC) via bizfile Online and provide confirmation. State fees are separate.
9) Do you provide compliance reminders?
Yes. Annual/biennial reminders are included so you don’t miss required California filings.
10) What if someone lists you as their Registered Agent without your consent?
If we’re shown as agent of record, we must accept service until we resign. We notify the entity and may assess a non-client handling fee, then file a resignation of agent with the SOS.
11) How do I verify you’re still my Registered Agent?
Check your Secretary of State business record. The “Agent for Service of Process” field will show our agent name if we are current.
12) Do you handle general mail reception and scanning?
Yes, via a separate mail service with separate signup and billing. This keeps RA service and mail service independent and easy to cancel individually. You can use just our RA service, just our mail service, or both.
13) What forms or IDs are required for your separate mail/scanning services?
USPS Form 1583 is required for mail reception, with two IDs (one government photo ID). If completed remotely, the 1583 must be notarized. This does not apply to our Registered Agent service.
How should I format my mailing address for the separate mail/scanning services?
When using our separate mail/scanning services, USPS requires that each client’s mailbox be clearly designated with either “PMB” or “#”. You cannot substitute “Suite,” “Unit,” or “Apt” in place of the mailbox number; those are not accepted under postal regulations for CMRAs.
Correct examples:
- 123 Main Street PMB 101, San Diego, CA 92123
- 123 Main Street #101, San Diego, CA 92123
Incorrect examples (not allowed):
- 123 Main Street Suite 101
- 123 Main Street Unit 101
Using the correct format ensures your mail is delivered without delay or rejection by USPS.
